City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors and role models, these diverse young leaders help children stay in school and on track, and transform schools and communities across the United States, as well as through international affiliates in Johannesburg, South Africa and London, England.
City Year Detroit was founded in 1999 and in 2010 proudly celebrated its eleventh anniversary year of service to at risk children and neighborhoods throughout Detroit and the surrounding area. CYD corps members serve primarily in seven schools schools in Detroit, MI. Each team focuses on providing students with support in the ABCs—attendance, behavior, and coursework. This support is achieved through one-on-one and group tutoring, mentoring, overall classroom support, and after school programs that help create an improved learning environment.
In addition to their in-school service, City Year corps members coordinate service projects, workshops, and the City Heroes/ Young Heroes Saturday service-learning program for high school and middle school students. Through these efforts, City Year’s work impacts children and communities in Detroit.
