Detroit, Michigan

Honoree:

Roy S. Roberts was appointed in May 2011 by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder to serve as Emergency Manager of Detroit Public Schools. He also serves as Chair of the Board of the new statewide Educational Achievement Authority.

Mr. Roberts’ illustrious professional life shines with decades of stellar managerial, financial and transformative organizational experience. After a breakthrough career at General Motors, he retired in 2000 as the highest-ranking executive of African American descent in the U.S. automobile industry. Roy Roberts perfectly fits City Year Detroit’s highest criteria for our annual Idealist in Action” award – and most especially for going above and beyond expectations here in Detroit. City Year was founded on volunteer service through young adults who step up and serve full time, above and beyond the norm. Therefore, we honor Roy Roberts most of all for stepping up to come out of a well-earned retirement to accept the extraordinary responsibility of being DPS Emergency Manager at a crucial time in our city’s history. Most importantly, we honor him for being an incredibly inspiring role model for us all – and especially for our beloved community and the future we all share.
